Check Your Faucet for Sediment and Mineral Buildup
When the water comes out of your faucet, it can appear as brown or yellow if there is sediment and mineral buildup. If you have this problem, you need to clean the faucet by removing the aerator (which looks like a bit of disk) and cleaning off any built-up residue with an old toothbrush or disposable brush. If your faucet is leaking, the water can also become brown as it mixes with the dirt and dust in the air. In this case, you will need to replace your faucet washer and fix the leak.
Flush Your Water Heater to Remove Any Sediment
If your brown tap water comes from your hot water, you may have sediment and mineral buildup in your water heater. To clean out the debris, drain the tank of all its contents by turning off both valves to prevent any scalding or burns. Open a faucet on each side of the house (hot and cold) to release the pressure. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater and turn on the faucet. Once all of the water has drained, turn on both valves again and refill the tank. This will help remove any built-up sediment from your water heater.
Add Water Softener to the Plumbing System
When your water is hard, it can leave behind deposits that turn your water brown. A water softener helps prevent this by adding sodium ions to the water, which binds with the minerals and prevents them from depositing on surfaces. If you think a water softener may be something you need, contact a local plumber to have one installed in your home.
Install a Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water System
A reverse osmosis drinking water system can also help eliminate the brown tinge in your tap water. The systems use an additional filter to remove any sediment and minerals from your tap water before it is used for drinking. It’s best if this system uses ceramic or carbon filters to remove more contaminants.
